The tornado season is around the corner

In an extreme climate like the one we have in Kansas, sudden temperature changes can bring about very large storms capable of developing tornadoes. These meteorological phenomena are very dangerous, and fortunately, the sirens sound to warn us when one is approaching, giving us time to shelter from the danger and destruction they cause during and after the storm.

A tornado is a rotating column of air that forms in a very powerful storm. This column of air connects the ground with the clouds and can cause massive damage, with winds that can exceed 300 km/h. Its appearance is unpredictable, so being prepared is essential.

To protect yourself during tornado season, which in our area is typically from April to June, here are some useful tips:

  1. Have an emergency plan: It’s important that you and your family know what to do in the event of a tornado. Identify a safe place in your home, such as a basement or an interior room without windows on the lowest level of the house.

  2. Listen for alerts: Keep an emergency radio or a mobile phone app to receive tornado alerts. If the siren sounds, don’t hesitate, take shelter immediately.

  3. Emergency kit: Prepare a kit with water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, essential medications, warm clothing, and other necessities. This kit should be ready to use at any time.

  4. Proper shelter: If you don’t have a basement, look for an interior bathroom or a small room without windows. Avoid large rooms or corner rooms, as they are more prone to damage.

  5. Protect your head: If you can’t reach a safe shelter, cover your head with a helmet, pillow, or any object that offers protection.

  6. Stay calm: Staying calm is crucial. Don’t panic and follow the authorities’ instructions. If you're driving, try to get out of the tornado's path or seek shelter in a safe building if possible.

Remember that tornado season is one of the most dangerous times of the year, but with proper preparation, we can protect ourselves and minimize damage. Stay alert, prepared, and safe.
